Twenty one Centres of Excellence are currently
members of GNESD and nine developing country Centres are represented
in the current "Energy Access, Policy implementation" Working Group.
The structure for the Network emphasizes
the role of existing institutions and the importance of a flat
networking organisation that avoids unnecessary bureaucracy.
An international Steering Committee representing the GNESD members
provides strategic direction and oversight. The
GNESD donor countries and organisations include Denmark, France,
Germany, United Kingdom, UNF and the UNDP. UNEP is a non-voting member
of the Steering Committee, which is jointly chaired by Thomas B.
Johansson of IIIEE, Sweden and Ogunlade Davidson of the University of
Sierra Leone.
UNEP was instrumental in
launching the GNESD as a so-called
Type II initiative at the 2002
World Summit on
Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg. The creation
of GNESD came as a response to the United Nations General Assembly
resolution A/RES/56/2001, the recommendations of the ninth meeting of
the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-9), and the Programme
of Action for Least Developed Countries. The creation of GNESD is also
in line with the G8 Renewable Energy Task Force Report (2001).
